key idea:
They came for work and to bring back money for their familys

In New Zealand, the Otago goldfields
attracted the first batch of organised Chinese migrant workers.
By 1869 there were about 2,000 Chinese people in New Zealand.
Almost all were men who came to work the goldfields of Otago and the West Coast.
Most of them probably intended to make their fortunes and return to China.


Key idea:
Lots of Chinese people came for Otagos gold and not many worked elsewhere.

When the Chinese came to New Zealand they did not know the language or their way around, they were disriminated on when they came because they were different and "yellow". People were scared of the "yellow peril" because the Chinese were
different, yellow, different eyes and there were so many of them.

The could not comunicate with anyone and were discriminated.
